Elon Musk: Grok 3.5 is trying to reason from first principles.
“Grok 3.5 is trying to reason from first principles, so apply the tools of physics to thinking. So if you're trying to get to fundamental truths, you boil things down to the axiomatic elements that are most likely to be correct and then you reason up from there and then you can test your conclusions against those axiomatic elements. And in physics, if you violate conservation of energy or momentum, then you're either going to get a Nobel Prize or you're wrong. And you're certainly wrong, basically.
So, the focus of Grok 3.5 is fundamentals of physics and applying physics tools across all lines of reasoning and to aspire to truth with minimal error. There's always going to be some mistakes that are made, but we aim to get to truth with acknowledged error, but minimize that error over time. And I think that's actually extremely important for AI safety.

Elon Musk's vision for Grok 3.5 is a game-changer in the world of AI. By focusing on reasoning from first principles and applying the rigorous tools of physics, this model promises to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve. The emphasis on truth and minimizing error is not just about technical precision; it's about building trust in AI systems that can truly benefit humanity. This approach could revolutionize how we tackle complex problems, from scientific discovery to everyday decision-making. Exciting times ahead for AI safety and innovation!
And in so doing, Elon has inherited the mistake of academia.

Don Scott poignantly asked in his critique of astrophysics, The Electric Sky: "What if your 'obviously correct,' basic, starting-point presumption is wrong?" We've seen this type of thinking many times before, + it's exactly how the public gets saddled w terrible theories.

The first principles of reason aren’t physics.
Only in the sense of sense perception.
The first principles of reason are metaphysical.
— The law of non-contradiction
— The principle of identity
— Good should be done and evil avoided
— Our senses can be trusted
— The universe is ordered
— The universe is intelligible
— Other minds exist
— Truth is the adequation of mind and reality
— The mind is essentially spiritual, and cannot be reduced to matter in motion
Etc.
The subject is far more complex than Musk seems to understand.
