Stanford researchers scanned teenagers listening to their mothers, having already shown that in young children her voice lights up half the brain. Something had switched.
In children under about twelve, the reward circuitry fires harder for their mother's voice than for a stranger's. In adolescents it flips. The reward regions respond more strongly to unfamiliar voices, and her voice stops being the sound the system reaches for.
The crossover happens somewhere between thirteen and fourteen. Nothing has gone wrong. The circuitry has not broken and she has not been demoted. It is being retuned deliberately, because a person who is going to leave home needs to start finding other people interesting, and the brain arranges that by making everyone outside the house more rewarding to listen to.
Which means the thing every mother of a teenager describes has a mechanism. He is not ignoring her out of contempt. Her voice is no longer arriving at the part of him that used to light up for it.
Two things worth holding onto here. The first is that the hearing and processing regions are still there and still working. He hears her perfectly. What changed is what his reward system does with the sound.
The second is that this is temporary, and there is a whole literature on adult children and their mothers to say so. The circuitry is being repointed outward for the years he needs to build a life away from her. It is not being deleted.
So a woman finds herself talking to somebody who used to run toward her voice across a car park, and who now barely registers it. That is her son's brain doing exactly what it is supposed to do, on schedule, and it is a horrible thing to be on the receiving end of.

They took two to three times more risks than when playing alone. Adults given the same setup drove identically either way, whether anyone was watching them or not.
The friends were somewhere else entirely and said nothing. Their whole presence amounted to a single sentence spoken before the game began.
Then the team ran it inside a brain scanner. When adolescents believed they were being watched, the reward regions fired harder at identical choices, and the parts handling self-control did not change at all.
That last detail is what makes this useful. If friends were simply a distraction, the control system would have been the thing that slipped. It was not. The teenagers were thinking as clearly as ever, about a set of payoffs that had quietly become more attractive.
It is the same shift as the voice, showing up in behaviour instead of on a scan. Her voice stops being rewarding. Peers become enormously rewarding. Same dial, turning. One of the researchers put it plainly: teenage peers activate the same reward centres that respond to money, food and drugs.
So the boy who drives sensibly with his mother in the car and dangerously with three friends in it is the same boy in both cars. He is running one brain against a different set of numbers, and the numbers moved without him noticing.
Part 3. Researchers stressed 64 girls with a maths test and an impromptu speech in front of three strangers who had been told to stay cold and unresponsive.
Then they split them four ways: comforted by their mother in person, or on the phone, or by instant message, or not at all. The in-person group and the phone group came out almost identical. Cortisol fell, oxytocin rose, and hearing her did what a hug did.
The girls who got her words in writing showed nothing. Their stress hormones stayed as high as the group who had no contact with their mothers at all. The words were hers, the comfort was hers, the messages said what she would have said out loud, and the body registered none of it. The researchers concluded the sound was doing the work.
One honest limit, because it matters here. These girls were 7 to 12, so this is not direct evidence about teenagers, and nobody has run the same design on a 15-year-old boy.
Hold it next to the scans anyway. His reward system has stopped reaching for her voice, and nothing in that research suggests his stress response has followed it.
So the practical version is almost annoyingly simple. When something has gone wrong for him, pick up the phone and ring. He will answer in three words, sound like he wants the call over with, and something in him will settle regardless.
